Gorse – mountain gold!

Gorse is one of my absolute favourites when it comes to lightening the mood. It is almost always in bloom and covers the Welsh mountains in gold. A source of nutrition

The shrub has very high nutritional value and is especially high in protein. It was commonly used as winter fodder for livestock. It is very thorny so needs to be crushed before feeding. Welsh mountain ponies feast on these plants during the winter. As I had noted a difference in how well different ponies withstood the welsh winters in the mountains I asked a horseman about this. His answer was that it is only ponies with true mountain breeding that can live off what the mountain gives in winter.
